IS MODAFINIL AS A TREATMENT FOR NARCOLEPSY?

May be you don’t know that up until now there have been few narcolepsy treatments. But, a successful treatment for narcolepsy is available for you. It is referred to as Modafinil. It is a drug that was discovered a few years ago and it is an ideal treatment for narcolepsy. In Australia, doses of dexamphetamine have been used as the only relatively successful medication for narcolepsy. Dexamphetamine is some kind of a stimulant that excites dopamine hence forcing the body to be awake. It has several disadvantages which include:
  • Known to be highly addictive
  • Builds tolerance quickly
  • Creates euphoria

In a very simple explanation, Modafinil turns off the sleepy part of the brain while dexamphetamine excites the stimulant parts of the brain.

Why modafinil is a superior treatment.

  • Unlike dexamphetamine, it is not addictive
  • Its does not create euphoria
  • Its effects lasts long (you only need one dose in the morning)
  • Cheap because you need them less often
  • It has low abuse potential
All these benefits put it above any other treatment for narcolepsy.

It is the best treatment up to today. It is has different names in different countries. For example in the UK and USA, it is known as Provigil and Alertec in Canada.

Dosage

This depends on a number of factors such as the medical conditions that you may have medications you are currently on and your age. The normal recommended dosage is 200 mg daily. The general dosing information includes:

- the medication is usually in tablet form and taken by mouth
- it can be taken with or without food
- if you stop taking it, it will not work. It must be taken as prescribed
- for any doubts, should not hesitate to consult your health provider

This drug does not cure narcolepsy; it just reduces its severity.
